The mountain with the most beautiful and picturesque places in Bulgaria.
If there is a destination, which is worth visiting during all seasons, it is for sure the Rhodope Mountains. The mountain spans over a vast territory, occupying a major part of Central Southern Bulgaria. It is conventionally divided into Western and Eastern Rhodopes.
The Western Rhodopes are higher and all the high summits, canyons and caves are focused there, while the Eastern Rhodopes are lower. It is also known that the mountain was not iced during the ice-age. In the western part of the Rhodopes the climate is mountainous, while to the East it is milder due to the warm air coming from the Mediterranean, along the river valleys.
According to the most widely spread legend, the Rhodopes are the birthplace of the mythical singer Orpheus, who mesmerized people and animals with his magical music. Another ancient legend is related to the Thracian king Hem and his queen Rhodope, who loved so much that they called themselves with divine names – Zeus and Hera. The gods got angry with the impudence of the couple and separated them, transforming them into separate and remote mountains – the Balkan and the Rhodopes. This and other legends turn the Rhodopes into a place of special mysticism.
Some of the most popular Bulgarian resorts are situated in the Rhodopes.
These are the winter resorts Pamporovo and Chepelare and the spa resorts Velingrad and Devin. The combination of healing mineral water and pure mountain air has been attracting people to these areas for millennia.
Pamporovo resort has the reputation of being the sunniest ski destination in Europe. It enjoys long ski season starting from the beginning of December and lasting until the mid of April, with average snow coverage here being 140 cm.
During the summer, Rhodopi Mountain and the area around Pamporovo are providing excellent climate, tranquility and crisp air. It provides numerous options for sport and tourism, as well as entertainment.
